Customized Automotive Chemicals Help Give Chemical Suppliers An Edge In Business

January 12th, 2011

Those in the automotive chemicals business are often on the lookout for ways to stand out from their competition. Constantly trying to outdo each other in terms of product range, services offered and pricing, these businesses often forget that one of the major things can really set them apart from others is simply a unique product with superior quality.

One of the ways to achieve this is by partnering with a supplier that can customize specific formulations that are different from the others currently on the market. By combining ingenuity with a thorough understanding of both chemicals and the industry, these businesses can maximize the expertise of their suppliers to come up with a solution tailored to address unique situations.

Quality is crucial in any business, and the automotive chemicals trade is no different. This is why businesses need to choose suppliers that use top-grade raw materials and whose chemicals meet all the necessary industry approvals. Suppliers that have established partnerships with their manufacturers will be able to provide clients with reasonable prices without sacrificing quality.

Chemicals for the automotive industry are a dime a dozen, and consumers will be drawn to those which have something different to offer. Whether it’s a lubricant that can withstand the most extreme environments or eco-friendly car wash chemicals, businesses have the capability to provide their customers with something that other companies don’t have. By enlisting the services of suppliers who offer custom solutions, those who retail automotive chemicals will be able to step their business up a notch with their unique product.

Automotive Electronics Plug You Into Safety

January 11th, 2011

Every day, virtually everything around us becomes a little smarter and a little safer. In our age of information and technology, new digital and electronic components continually make our lives easier and safer at home, at work and on the road.

Some gadgets and gizmos, like nose hair trimmers, could easily disappear without much fuss. There are many intelligent tools, on the other hand, that make our lives more convenient and safer on a daily basis.

Our enormous world of “smart” technology is ruled by new automotive electronics. Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and other indispensable features are excellent examples of smart and safe automotive electronics.

Through recent developments within the automotive industry, there has been a huge increase in the number of electronic devices installed at assembly plants. Here’s an example of how quickly cars have evolved electronically: the Apollo 11 traveled to the moon and back again, using just 150 kilobytes of onboard memory. Today’s typical CD player, however, uses a whopping 500 kilobytes of memory just to keep our favorite songs from skipping. That uninterrupted music is an iota of how electronics impact a car’s performance to benefit drivers.

The term used to describe the technology involved in automobile communication systems is “Telematics”, and it was first used to describe the blending of telecommunications and “informatics”, or information technology. The telematics industry recently commanded an increased amount of attention from car manufacturers. Industry insiders predicted that telematics would become “the” go-to technology as early as the mid-1990s. Telematics was expected to increase overall sales and transform the automotive industry into a major player in mobile technology.

In reality, these optimistic forecasts panned out to be a little less than initially predicted. As more conservative measures came in to play, the initial industry projection of more than $40 billion dollars has been whittled nearly in half.

By no means do these numbers indicate an abandonment of the development of telematics technology. Automobile manufacturers have, in fact, invested an average of $2000 on electronic systems for every vehicle coming off the line. That’s a huge increase over the $110-per-car budget set in the early 1970s. The spending increase is reflected in everything from better engine performance and improved entertainment systems, to security features and safety devices. All of the electronic components work together to provide drivers with more comfortable, better performing and safer automobiles.

Here are some of the most common safe and smart automotive electronics systems:

CAN, or Controller Area Network

Your car doesn’t run on one computer; it operates with a network of computers. The Controller Area Network links all of the computers together. This type of system is similar to those used in home and business computers, known as Local Area Networks (LANs). The Controller Area Network in your car links the many separate computer systems together and allows them to communicate with each other. These interconnected systems incorporate critical systems like engine management, cruise control and anti-lock brakes with less demanding applications like seat controls and automatic windows.

Increased Fuel Efficiency

Shrinking resources and soaring fuel prices have forced automotive manufacturers to increase their supply of fuel-efficient vehicles. Smart auto makers are using new automotive electronics to create cars that burn fuel more efficiently. This is most evident with the common EFI, or electronic fuel injection system. Hybrid vehicles have taken this technology one step further, with electronic devices that allow drivers to switch automatically between gas and electric engines.

Trustworthy Safety Devices

There are two types of devices designed to protect the safety of the driver and passengers: active and passive devices.

* Active: These devices never stop working to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers. DSR (dynamic steering response), TCS (traction control) and ASR (acceleration slip regulation) are all examples of active safety devices. You may not notice these systems in operation, but they’re always working to create a safer ride. Active devices can sense the road and driving conditions and adjust your car’s performance accordingly. Researchers have credited ESC (electronic stability control) with reducing single vehicle skids.

* Passive: While more visible and seemingly simpler, passive devices are also controlled by smart and safe automotive electronics. Developments in electronics and technology have improved the deployment of airbags tremendously over the years. Airbags in early-model cars would deploy too soon or too late and provided little or no benefit to the driver and passengers. Now, cars have more advanced systems that can actually sense conditions that may lead to a high collision impact. Seating adjustment and airbag systems are automatically deployed to minimize the impact and decrease the degree of injury to driver and passengers.

When you consider the safety advancements that have been made in just a decade, you’ll agree that today’s cars are miles above their predecessors. Our automobiles provide so much more than a lift from point “A” to point “B”. With smart automotive electronics, every trip is as comfortable, secure and safe as possible.

Chrome Plating in Automotive and Household Industries

January 11th, 2011

In recent decades, chrome plating has become one of the most popular metallic finishes available, and it is widely used in several industries.

The automotive industry is the single largest consumer of chrome plating, which appears on trim and accessories for many cars and motorcycles.

Other industries have been picking up on this trend, and chrome plating is now utilized for household fixtures and fittings as well, and even fishing lures. In recent years, chrome plating is available in satin finishes also. Satin chrome is a good aesthetic match for stainless steel and aluminum finishes.

Chrome is both attractive and durable, and as such, it has become a staple finish in the automotive industry. At one time, steel was used for car bumpers and body parts; however, it was later discovered that plastic was lighter, cheaper, and easier to manufacture.

The only problem with plastic components was that they were not as shiny and attractive as metal parts. During the 1970s, this problem was solved with the advent of a technique for electroplating plastic components with metallic finishes, thereby offering all of the advantages of plastic parts, as well as the beauty of metal. Chrome trim was always more popular in North America than in other parts of the world, and reached its peak usage there during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

It has steadily increased in popularity in other areas of the world as well; its popularity has risen by 50% in Europe, since 1993, and has almost doubled in the United Kingdom during the same period. Chrome plating’s resistance to oxidation and corrosion, its ability to withstand environmental extremes, its ease of care, and its ultra-bright specular finish make it an ideal plating material for automotive trim and accessories.

Components can come from the factory already chrome-plated, or they can be plated by the consumer after vehicle purchase. There are many companies which specialize in electroplating, and many automotive finishers which specialize in just chrome plating. Aside from its other advantages, chrome plating is also advantageous because it saves consumers time and money in searching for and purchasing new parts for their vehicle, as damaged or worn parts can simply be re-plated instead of being replaced.

This process is more cost-effective than purchasing a new part, and also reduces waste and, therefore, environmental impact.

Household fixtures are often plated with chrome, because they require many of the same qualities of vehicle trim. Bathroom fittings, doorknobs, handles and many other household items are often plated with chrome.

Before chrome, these items were sometimes plated with silver, copper or brass but they were difficult to maintain. Silver plating tarnishes, copper plating corrodes, brass plating is prone to verdi gris corrosion;chrome plating is as aesthetically pleasing as other metals, if not more so, and doesn’t have any of the disadvantages of these other metals.

The versatility, beauty, durability and easy cleaning of chrome plating have made it one of the most popular metallic finishes. It is particularly popular in the automotive industry, but it has been becoming a more popular finish for household fixtures and other applications as well. Chrome’s durability, resistance to wear and beautiful finish have made it a popular choice for a variety of applications, including house-wares and automotive components.

Change Management Is Coming Again in the Auto Industry

January 11th, 2011

With all the problems at the US Automakers we have seen lay offs, stock price declines, profit estimates slashed and some shake up at the top as well. That is right Change Management has occurred at many of the Top Companies such a Ford Motor Company, DaimlerChrysler and General Motors. Still industry analysts say that there is much more change management to come in the future. How much you ask?

Well quite a bit actually, you see this was just round one at Ford Motor Company as they announced 14,500 lay offs and they have already pre-announced nearly 100,000 total. So the 14.5 K is a relative drop in the bucket of things to come many fear. Ford has offered 70,000 buyout packages and even the Union Bosses agree that they should take those packages. But indeed Ford is only one company and we have not heard from GM as to their plans in the short term.

Will there be a huge shake up at General Motors too? And when will this occur? It might be sooner or later say analysts. They are closing factories and already admitted that and therefore the big lay offs will be coming and that also means regime change at GM; change management. The question the industry is asking is who is going to come and who is going to go? One thing all analyst do agree on is that we will know soon enough.

Automotive Demographics

January 10th, 2011

Automotive demographics deal with the population characteristic of automobiles. Generally, the automotive demographics involve the analysis of demographic variables such as how many people are using automobiles, the age of the drivers, the gender of the driver and the demand of different automobiles. The main means of transportation in the United States is road travel. There are about 4 million miles of public roads in the US. Highways and byways are getting heavily crowded with the arrival of more and more automobiles. According to the automotive demographics, about 17 million new domestic and imported cars and trucks are purchased by the Americans. To compensate this high level of consumer demand, automakers in the US have to produce about 12 million to 13 million new cars and trucks each year.

There are many factors that affect the demand for automobiles in the industrialized countries. The research on travel demand and transportation shows that the demand for automobiles rises with income. Many non-economical factors also affect the demand of automobiles. Automotive demographics show that the demand of automobiles also varies with age and gender of the user. Interestingly, women with low income generally travel less than men, middle aged people and people with higher incomes. The household characteristics such as family size, family type, age of the house holder and marital status are also important automotive demographic variables that explain the variation in travel demand.

Demographic variables are also important in making transportation projections. The graphical analysis of demographic composition of automobile use is widely used as the first step in many automotive analytical systems. The collection of right data is the first step in automotive demographics.

A Look at Recent Automotive Sales Figures

January 9th, 2011

The great depression is making life miserable in the U.S. It is even catching up with the automotive industry. With the crude oil price hitting all-time highs and when doubts prevail about the availability of the fuel, and the scientific fraternity burn their midnight oil to come up with an alternative for oil, who can we blame if people show the cold shoulder to autos. More than that it is more economical to hire a taxi, rather than maintaining a luxurious sedan. The automotive sales figures of 2007 show some good signs for some cars while others show dismal performance.

Total sales show a down swing in the US with a decrease of 2.5% over 2006. Domestic vehicles are down 4% while automobile imports have gone up 2%. When it comes to autos, it is again General Motors leading the fray with Ford and Chrysler LLC following upon their heels. While sales of General Motors is down 6%, Ford and Chrysler LLC are down 11% and 3.1% respectively.

Toyota has surpassed Ford in sales in the US by about 3.5% selling about 60,000 more vehicles than Ford. It is something unbelievable and happened for the first time. The top European car model is still the BMW. It shows a 7% increase over last year. Volkswagen comes second. The sale of the Ford truck series is up and the pickup truck has been at the top of the best-seller list in America for more than 25 years.

But sales of the F-Series were down by 13 percent, and the Chevrolet Silverado ended the year about 72,000 units behind. Even the October sales of general Motors plunged headlong by 45 percent, with Ford and Chrysler LLC following closely to a pathetically weak level in the past 25 years. The reason is blamed on low consumer confidence coupled with economic depression. People are reluctant to invest in motor vehicles due to the fear that they may suffer more if they invest in them.

This October, the vehicles sold were fewer than the vehicles sold last year this month. This month the sales were only 838,156 vehicles which is 32% less. According to Auto data Corp and Wards Auto Info, this is the worst the industry has been since January 1991. This is clearly a severe, severe recession for the U.S. automotive industry and something we really can’t sustain. Clearly we are in a dire situation Says Mike DiGiovanni, GM’s executive director of global market and industry analysis. He further adds that if GM sales were adjusted for population growth, this was the worst hit that has ever happened.

It’s truck sales also tumbled by 51 percent. Passenger car sales also dipped by 34 percent. Even Ford’s Focus small car, cannot hold it’s ground and saw its sales drop by 18 percent. The condition is so bad that cars that were once selling high volumes show a dismal state. For the Honda Acura model, it was the other way round and had their sales rise by 6 percent. Nissan Corp also had nothing to boast about. The bleak car sales is an issue of concern for the coming president for they have promised great investment in this sector.

The Automotive Industry Affects Many

January 8th, 2011

The twentieth century produced millions of great inventions. Computers and the Internet are definitely at the top of the list, but so are cars. The whole car industry provides millions and millions of jobs. Not just the assembly plants. When people think about the car industry, that is usually the first thing that comes to mind, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. There is so many other jobs involved and affected by the automotive industry. Not to mention the jobs affected by people in the automotive field, such as the local fast food outlet.

In order to build a car you first need to build the components. But before you can manufacture the components, you need to build the automotive stamping dies that will stamp out the parts. But, even before that, the car and all of the individual parts have to designed.

This chain starts with the heads of the car companies. They decide to build a car. They get a general concept of what they want and pass this information on to their engineers. The engineers design the overall look of the car, then dissect it into smaller parts. Each part then has to be designed and blueprints drawn up. After the blueprints are approved, the heads decide how many of this particular model they want to build.

This information is then sent out to the suppliers, the metal stamping companies, for one. The metal stamping companies bid on the job, based on the number of parts required. The metal stamping company has to buy the die needed to stamp the parts, so the bid has to include this cost. Most models run for 5 years, so this cost can be amortized over this 5 year period, helping the company decide how much they have to charge per part. The stamping company does not make any money on the parts during the first year. They will not realize any profit until the cost of the die is recovered.

The US Economy and the Impact of the Automobile Industry

January 7th, 2011

The final 2008 auto industry sales numbers are now in, and they do not make for pretty reading. As reported by the AP, every major manufacturer reported drops of more than 30 percent (year-on-year) in December.

The Decline of the US Economy equals Failure for the Big 3 Auto Giants

Leading the fall was Chrysler, selling 53 percent fewer vehicles than last December and 30 percent fewer in 2008 than in 2007. GM sold 2.9 million vehicles in 2008, down 23 percent, the lowest number in 49 years. Toyota and Honda saw declines in December that were were even larger than their U.S.-based competitors’. Toyota was down 37 percent and Honda 35 percent, compared with Ford’s 32 percent drop and GM’s 31 percent slide. Nissan also dropped 31 percent. Cumulatively, these figures represent the largest year-on-year drop in US auto sales since the Arab oil embargo days of 1973-74.

Indeed, the crash in sales over the last several months has meant that auto-makers, despite shutting down production for weeks at a time, have been unable to clear inventory. Lots around the country are full and manufacturers and dealers are offering substantial programs of rebates, discounts, 0% financing and other incentives to entice buyers back to the showrooms.

The Impact of the US Bailout on the? Industry so far:

At the end of December GMAC received $6 billion in aid from the federal government and is now easing up its terms for writing new auto loans. GMAC’s share of financing of GM car purchases had dropped to 3% after their October decision to lend only to people with credit scores of 700 or higher. The new terms mean that buyers with credit scores over 620 are now finding financing. The credit freeze seems to be thawing and some dealers reported that up to 40% of their sales in the very last week in December.

The bridging loans arranged by the Bush administration will expire at the end of March, when the Big 3 will be required to show restructuring plans for viability. The incoming Obama administration has not yet announced plans for their approach to the problem and so the automobile?trade has to proceed without knowing what will impact them in the spring. It’s likely that these plans will include large concessions from suppliers and labor and some paring back of dealerships.?? Would the Bankruptcy of the Automobile Industry be less of a negative impact for the US Economy???

The Big 3 have said that a formal Chapter 11 bankruptcy is the worst possible outcome for the entire economic base of this country as a whole. The main point of the auto manufacturers is that consumers will be loath to buy a car from a manufacturer who is “bankrupt”.?In addition to the bailouts, they are going that extra mile to avoid bankruptcy. The various factors contributing to consumer responses to the automobile industry and their impact on the US economy are:

oversupply on the car lots motivated dealers easier financing terms long-term industry presence for after-sale support world-wide economic recession driving down the price of gas

This it all adds up to one thing. There is no better time to buy a new car.

If you can take advantage of the great deals on new cars and want to sell used cars??to us to buy a new one, remember Big Bucks Auto. Despite everything happening in with the economy, we have been here for over three generations and will be going strong for many more.
